This wonderful pond iris is a hardy lakeshore perennial herb, it is a waterside and shallow water plant. It bears narrow leaves that are sword shaped which emerge from thick horizontal root stock. Every year between May to July each stem holds 2-3 beautiful blue flowers which are large and showy and bear yellow and white markings at the base of the sepals. It is widely used as a garden ornament for its brightly coloured floral display. This pond iris can be found in Edges of ponds and moist soils; shallow waters, sedge meadows, marshes, and along stream banks and shores. Apparently the leaves of this Iris can be used externally for burns and sores and the roots for a few other strange medicinal uses!
